We continued our fine motor work this week. Ask me what I made with snap cubes!
We learned that masterpieces are not made in a day which means we get to hold onto things we are working at to make it better over the course of the week. Ask me what I worked on throughout the week? What was the difference between the first day and the last.
Ask me what we did on the first day of Autumn. Ask me how many leaves we needed for the rubbing. Ask me to do a rubbing at home with coins or leaves from the backyard.
In math we continued with sorting and patterning. Ask me what patterns there are in our everyday world. (ie. day&night/seasons/days of the week/music/ocean waves/dancing/numbers etc)
In preparation for Orange Shirt Day we learned a little about residential schools by reading the book When We Were Alone by David Robertson. Ask me why Nókom dresses in rainbows? Ask me how are the children dressed at the school where Nókom attended. Ask me why Nókom and her friends braid their hair with blades of grass? Ask me whom Nókom was separated from at the school?
Terry Fox:
The Terry Fox Run was a complete success! Our school raised lots of money with Twoonies for Terry. Thank you to everyone who donated and helped make this fundraiser a success! We have been focusing on what it means to do things for others and Terry Fox has been a fantastic role model for selflessness. We have been working on our stamina for the run during our gym classes and it shows by the enthusiasm shown on Wednesday morning. Ask me how it felt being cheered on by the older kids in our school. Ask me if I was able to run all 3 laps. We am so proud of our Kindergarten friends and their dedication and determination. Way to go Kinder!
*Tentative* Walking Field Trip:
We are planning to go on a walking field trip to Fish Creek (weather permitting) on Thursday, October 10th to take in and explore the beauty of the Autumn season before it becomes too cold outside. We are looking for 3 volunteers with security clearance. If you would like to join us, please reach out to me at hesiarkiewicz@cbe.ab.ca
Pumpkins:
I am looking for 1 "smaller medium" sized pumpkin donation. I am planning to use the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving and Halloween with a hands on, inquiry based unit focused on pumpkins and I am super pumped to see all the discovery, exploration and learning in store for us. I will also be accepting gourds. If this is something you would be interested in providing - please email me at your earlier convenience at hesiarkiewicz@cbe.ab.ca
Orange Shirt Day:
Monday, September 30 is Orange Shirt Day which is a day we commemorate the Indigenous children who were sent away to residential schools in Canada. We are very fortunate at Andrew Sibbald this year as we have a resident artist who will be in the school to help deepen our understanding and appreciation of Indigenous ways. Elder Shirley Hill (Anatsipi'kssaakii) will work with our school community on Sept 30, Oct. 2, 4, 7, 9, Nov 13 & 15. During these visits, Elder Shirley will share some of the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot) teachings through dance, craftwork, beading and storytelling.
