February 18 to February 20

Domo Arigato, Mr. Roboto!

We had an exciting week that was kickstarted with the first round of our robotics residency.  Students were so excited to make their "baby robot" move.  Thank you Mr. Newman for a very engaging week!  Ask me who taught us.  Ask me who was in my group.  Ask me what the robot follows.  Ask me what happens when I change the colour of the line the robot follows.  Ask me what happens to the Ozobot when I put together a "code" like blue, black, blue or red, black, red. Ask me what I thought was fun.  Ask me what I thought was challenging.

In Math, we continued with making 10 as many different ways as possible.  Ask me to show you how many ways I can make ten.  Ask me what pattern happens when we organize our numbers (as one side gets bigger and the other side gets smaller).

In Literacy,  we continued to focus on rhyming.  The ability to pick out rhyming words as well as create rhyming words is a fundamental component of reading.  Ask me what word rhymes with _____ (the word they share can be made up, as long as they can explain why it rhymes). Play rhyming games in the car, around the house, while at the grocery store.  The more comfortable your child is playing with words, the easier the reading will come when they are developmentally ready to do so.

We successfully completed a practice lockdown this week.  Our kinder friends should be very proud of themselves for staying calm, sitting still and not talking until we were given the ok that the lockdown was over.  Great job Kinders!

Pink Shirt Day
This year Pink Shirt Day falls on Wednesday, February 26. Wearing pink demonstrates an understanding of the importance of promoting healthy relationships and actively working toward creating everyday environments that are safe, open and compassionate.  Pink Shirt Day is acknowledging our work needed towards creating safe spaces where bullying behaviours cannot exist. The Bullying Helpline (1-888-456-2323) is available 24 / 7 and offers help in more than 170 languages. https://www.alberta.ca/pink-shirt-day-alberta.aspx
