Hello Families!

Math
We continued to work on sorting items this week: Does it make a noise when it is dropped? How does it move? Does it sink or float?

Literacy
We completed our first directed drawing this week! A directed drawing is where we are following directions or steps to draw a specific thing. We focused on leaves this week. Ask your child about their picture.

Lockdown
This week had our first scheduled lockdown practice (PM Class). Students did a great job of getting to their 'safe spot' quickly. This safe spot is marked with a visual on the wall so students understand where to sit. When the school practices a lockdown all students find the closest safe spot and sit down quietly and await further instruction. All students practiced sitting in the safe spot in our classroom.

Elder Shirley

Orange Shirt day was a lovely opportunity for our friends to start gaining an understanding of Indigenous culture. Our friends got to meet Elder Shirley and her helper Lemon.  Ask me who Lemon is. Ask me to show you "Moose" in sign language. Ask me what the oil that Elder Shirley shared with us, smelt like. We will continue to work with her

Spirit Assembly

During our first Spirit Assembly of the year, our wonderful Grade 6 students surprised our Kindergarten friends with painted rocks. Rocks are a beautiful symbol of endurance, stability, and strength- all qualities needed to excel in school, but most importantly, in life.  Thank you to all our Grade 6 friends for the beautiful gifts made with love.

Walking Field Trip

We will be taking our Kindergarten classes on a walking field trip from our school to Fish Creek Park. During this trip we will discuss community safety and look for signs of Fall. We are currently looking for 1 more volunteer for our PM Kinder class.

Volunteering in our classroom/school

Volunteers are essential to help make our school so successful.  We appreciate your time and support.  We have a number of people who have only completed part of the volunteering process but not all three steps that are required. If you are interested in volunteering at Andrew Sibbald School, the following three steps must be completed.

  1.  Obtain a Police Security Clearance– This is initiated through the school and is good for 5 years.  If you do not have a current police clearance, or if you have questions about this process, please contact our Admin Assistant at the school, Lori Pulfer.
  1. Complete the Annual CBE Volunteer Form– This is the yellow form that was sent home in the package of information.  It is required by CBE and must be completed by volunteers each year.
  1. Complete the Online Andrew Sibbald School Volunteer Information formThis form is now completed onlineThis information is collected by our School Council Volunteer Coordinator to organize lists and facilitate the recruitment of volunteers for school and school council events.  The link for this online survey is bit.ly/SibbaldVolunteers .  It can also be found on our Andrew Sibbald School website on the “Get Involved: Volunteer” page.
Reminders:
Folders
Please remember to send your child's folder to school every day as this is how we send any communication home and their work from the day.

Clothing

Please have your child pick out clothes that are weather appropriate and items that they can put on themselves.  Feel free to have them practice putting on their snow pants, jackets and mittens without your help. It would be beneficial if you could label all items with your child's name or initials as we have many of the same items in Kindergarten.

Snacks

Please ensure you are packing a snack in a container that your child can open. Also, please send a spoon or fork if your child will need it to eat their snack.
