Hello Families!

Tomorrow our AM Kinders will be going to the Glenbow Museum. Please read the email I have sent regarding this trip. We are very excited to go on a bus, see this museum and look at all of the artifacts.

Literacy
This week we spent a lot of time talking about museums, galleries and artifacts. We also turned our classroom into a gallery and had our Grade 5/6 buddies come tour our exhibits. Morning Kinders voted and decided to focus their gallery on Old Weapons so we made shields and bow and arrows. Afternoon Kinders voted and decided to focus their gallery on Princess, Knights and Castles. We practiced drawing princesses and knights using directed drawings and built a castle out of our imagination playground pieces and blocks.

Library Books
Each child has had the opportunity to visit our school library, take out a book of their choice and bring it home. In Kindergarten, students are allowed to sign out one book at a time. Once they bring the book back to school, they will be able to go to the library and sign out another book. We will continue taking out library books until March 16 (before Spring Break) and then again until mid-June. You are encouraged to read these books at home with your child. Talk to them about why they chose this book. What do they notice in the pictures? What do they think is happening in this book? Is it a storybook (narrative, fiction) or an information book (non-fiction)? Read part of the story and stop, ask them what they predict will happen next.

Math/Science
We continued to talk about sorting foods, healthy vs. not healthy. Then we started talking about Winter. We used our 5 senses to discover more about Winter. Ask your child what their 5 senses are and how they can be used to describe Winter. On Thursday we talked about the weather and what happens with all of the moisture in the air when it is this cold out. We did a science experiment outside using boiling water and tossed it into the cold air to see what would happen. Ask your child what happened and why it happened.

Valentine's Day Cards Update
Based on the poll we did last week, we will be distributing cards in class. Thank you to all of the families who voted and shared their opinion. OPTIONAL: If you would like to participate, please make/create/purchase cards at home, label with "friend" instead of a specific child's name and send them with your child on Wednesday, Feb 12. It is imperative that enough cards are made for each student in your child's class. We have 19 students in the AM class and 20 students in the PM class. We will distribute them on Wed. Feb 12 and we will make Valentine's bags in class that week. Please do not send treats/food.

Permission Forms and White Envelopes
Please return all permission forms and report card white envelopes to me ASAP.
