Literacy:
Our word this month is Winter. As we work through these letters and sounds, be sure to check in with your child to see if they can find words that begin with these letters, start with the same sounds and spot these letters in your home.
We have begun our Weekend Journals. These are special journals where we draw what we did on the weekend and share it with our peers. As we are all at different places in our learning, our journals are will look different from our neighbours. Some friends are working on drawing shapes and making their work more organized, some are adding details like where the event took place, some are adding more colour and some are labelling or writing words on their page to help describe their work.
We have started talking about food, beginning with the food we like to eat (I love seeing what they pick - gingerbread houses, all desserts, the food they see at home or coke because: "I really like coke so I put two!" We also learned about the Food Rainbow and how important it is to eat the rainbow. Ask your child how we made the food rainbow. We will continue by sorting food based on healthy or not healthy. Ask your child to describe the foods they choose for their journal and why they chose them.
Today we began our 'Me' Bag. I am thrilled and so proud of the items that our first two brave friends brought and shared with us. Ask your child what their friends brought to show their uniqueness.
Reading! I am thrilled to see so many kiddos begin to find a love of reading. They have begun to come into the classroom and find a book to share with their friends and discuss. It is amazing and I am so proud!
Math:
We have spent time working on a word problem where we were distributing fireflies between a jar and the sky. We continue to discuss how this is an open-ended problem and how there are many different answers possible. The amazing part was the discussion around the commutative property and how we can swap numbers back and forth and the answer remains the same. Ask your child how they solved their problem.
Valentine's Day cards:
As we do not have school on Valentine's Day this year we thought we would ask our parent community about their preference for Valentine's Day cards. We have created a survey to gauge interest.
- If you would like your child to create/write/make Valentine's Day cards for their entire class at home and have your child distribute these cards in class, please vote YES.
- If you would prefer not to create/write/make Valentine's Day cards at home and distribute in class, please vote NO.
Reminders:
- Glenbow Museum forms were sent home on Tuesday. If you did not receive one or need a new one, please let me know.
- Please return the white report card envelope as I use this again in June. You are welcome to keep the report card.
- Over the next few weeks, I will be making different flashcards for our friends based on where they are at in their literacy journey. This is to help them gain confidence and build their skills. Please practice the letters/sounds/words at home each night and put the ring back in their folder as we review them each day as well.
Playdough
We are looking for two more volunteers to sign up for making playdough this term. If this is something you are interested in, please sign up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080e4daca72da2fe3-playdough
The link is also the schedule for those of you who have already signed up. Please involve your child during the playdough making process. Have them measure out the ingredients with you. Have them help you knead the dough. Here is a fabulous recipe for playdough from a parent whose playdough turned out great during the first term. https://www.iheartnaptime.net/play-dough-recipe/ **double this recipe**
With regards to how much playdough is required, please note that the amount made is split between the kindergarten classrooms - 2 medium or 1 large Ziploc bag is what we are looking for (approximately 2 large yogurt containers worth).
