Week of January 7 - January 9

Happy 2020 Beloved Sibbald Families!

I hope the break was filled with laughter, relaxation and rest! I have a feeling 2020 is going to be a fabulous year of learning and growing for all of us together. What a quick, short first week back, we have had already.

We started the week by sharing our holiday break.  Ask me what I drew as my favourite memory. Ask me what I drew as my favourite gift.
We started talking about ways we could be better students in the classroom.  We created 2 classroom goals for the New Year.  Ask me what they were and how we could make them happen: 1. Paying Attention - Listen when someone is talking and 2. Being helpful - do something without being asked.  We then talked about how we could make these goals happen.  We then talked about personal goals - lots of friends wanted to get better at writing letters and numbers, learning to read, sitting still on the carpet, and of course, and most importantly, getting better at the monkey bars!

Our classroom jobs were switched up this week.  Ask me what my job around the classroom for the next 2 weeks is.

We got to explore our gross motor skills with this week with scooter boards. Ask me what the rules were. Ask me what I used to move on the board. Ask me which movement I found easiest. Ask me which movement was difficult (side to side was tough for the majority of friends). Ask me who won the race between the boy's team and the girl's team.

In Math, we talked about how 1 number can be shown in different ways but stay the same. Ask me to show you what 4 looks like.  Ask me to show you a different way.  Ask me to show you using two hands. We spent time working on an open-ended math problem where we were distributing 10 fireflies between a jar and the sky. Ask me how I chose to solve this problem. How many were in my jar and how many were in the sky?

We have spent time working on a word problem where we were distributing fireflies between a jar and the sky. We continue to discuss how this is an open-ended problem and how there are many different answers possible. The amazing part was the discussion around the commutative property and how we can swap numbers back and forth and the answer remains the same. Ask your child how they solved their problem.

Glenbow Museum Feild Trip
We will be going to the Glenbow Museum on Friday, January 17, 2020.  Please return the completed permission form with your child as soon as possible. Your child will need comfortable walking shoes, a water bottle, and a snack.  We will be having our snack at the Glenbow Museum and will be back in time for our regular 12:00 dismissal time.

Valentine's Day Cards
As we do not have school on Valentine's Day this year we thought we would ask our parent community about their preference for Valentine's Day cards. We have created a survey to gauge interest.

  • If you would like your child to create/write/make Valentine's Day cards for their entire class at home and have your child distribute these cards in class, please vote YES
  • If you would prefer not to create/write/make Valentine's Day cards at home and distribute in class, please vote NO
We will make our decision based on what the majority has chosen. This survey will be open starting today and ending Wednesday, January 15.  Please click on this linkThe survey is anonymous. We will our decision on the blog next week. Thank you for your help!

Playdough

We are looking for two more volunteers to sign up for making playdough this term.  If this is something you are interested in, please sign up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080e4daca72da2fe3-playdough

The link is also the schedule for those of you who have already signed up. Please involve your child during the playdough making process.  Have them measure out the ingredients with you.  Have them help you knead the dough.  Here is a fabulous recipe for playdough from a parent whose playdough turned out great during the first term. https://www.iheartnaptime.net/play-dough-recipe/ **double this recipe**

With regards to how much playdough is required, please note that the amount made is split between the kindergarten classrooms - 2 medium or 1 large Ziploc bag is what we are looking for (approximately 2 large yogurt containers worth)

Adventures from our Week

 Gearing up for the races!

The domino structures are ever-fascinating - the amount of patience, teamwork, perseverance that goes into making these during center time is amazing!
